The ‘X Factor’ followed previous shows such as ‘Pop Stars’ and ‘Pop Idol’, which shared a similar theme. However, the ‘X Factor’ seemed to please audiences far more than its predecessors, and it has proved this in its longevity as a primetime hit on UK television, which is still going strong to this day, and even branching out to US audiences. There are a number of reasons this show has stolen the attention of weekend viewers.
Two elements the ‘X Factor’ has that the other shows did not are both format and musical variety. The previous talent shows mainly focused on pop music, and either creating a manufactured band or finding a solo star who was no older than 27. With the decrease in popularity of the manufactured pop group, and the restrictive format of auditioning only young solo artists, the ‘X Factor’ was a welcome change for the viewing public. The show has four different categories, which are solo boys under 25, solo girls under 25, solo men and women 25 and over and groups of all ages. The groups come to the show having already been performing together, and can be of any musical genre. The ‘X Factor’ sees a wide variety of personalities and musical tastes come together in a battle to win the hearts of the public.
Another important part of the show, which is very popular with viewers, is the battle between the four famous judges. Due to the fact that each judge mentors the competitors in one of the four categories, a fierce battle ensues throughout the series, which sometimes creates entertaining tension and occasional arguments. The public can’t get enough of seeing genuine, even if temporary, rifts between the famous faces. This coupled with the variety of talent, and audience participation through voting, makes the ‘X Factor’ must-watch television.
