Commission President Jose Manuel
Barroso stated at a recent EU-US
summit that 'The reality is that
the world is safer and more prosperous
when Europe and America work together
as global partners' US President
George W. Bush has 'always believed
that when America & the EU work
together we can accomplish 'big
deeds' and this world needs us
to work together 'cause there's
a lot of challenges.'

| 2007
looks set to prove another challenging
year for the two powers and they will
need to continue to work together on
pressing issues like climate change,
the Middle East and the currently stalled
world trade negotiations. |

The
face of Europe in Washington is EU
Ambassador to the US John Bruton.
Former Prime Minister of Ireland,
John Bruton has over 35 years political
experience. He is credited with transforming
the Irish economy into the Celtic
Tiger and he was deeply involved in
the Northern Ireland peace process
that ultimately led to the 1998 Good
Friday agreement. Bruton's role in
the US is to send home the message
to politicians and public that the
EU is a good partner for the US and
that a strong EU and US together is
good for the world.

'I
think there's going to have to be
European & American co-operation
on a number of issues that are looming
and Europe exercises influence in
places
where the United States does not'

Weisman, New York Times

On
the Hill, Bruton is in regular touch with
members of Congress. 'It's very important
to build up a good relationship with members
of Congress because Administrations come
and go… but members of Congress tend to
last quite a long time so ensuring that
every member of Congress knows about the
EU, recognises that the EU is a potential
partner for him or her in their work.' Reaching
the American public with a message of how
the EU is good for the US and vice versa
presents different challenges. According
to Anthony Smallwood, the EU's Head of Press
in Washington, certain aspects of the European
Union are harder to explain 'How Europe
is different in the way it approaches major
issues; the solidarity we have with new
member states but also the solidarity we
show in our grants to developing countries
- we're now responsible for 60% of all grant
aid and that's a big surprise to most Americans.'
This
report profiles EU Ambassador John Bruton
at work in Washington and on his recent
visit to South Bend, Indiana. Through his
meetings with politicians and the US public,
this eight-minute piece gives a timely insight
into the importance of EU-US relations and
the possibility of significant joint achievements
on the global stage.
