In
this VNR we visit the China Europe International
Business School, one of the organizations at
the front line of an expanding EU-China relationship.
CEIBS is a non-profit education organization,
established under a 20-year joint venture contract
between Shanghai Jiatong University and the
Brussels-based European Foundation for Management
Development. The school is one of the most successful
capital investments the EU has made in China
- it became self-sustainable within ten years
and has had influence across both the private
and State sectors. By introducing international
business education and standards into the market,
the school has played a key role in China's
economic growth. CEIBS Chinese graduates now
form part of a large emerging middle class in
China.

Serge Abou,
EC delegation to China
|
CEIBS
is an important example of Sino-European
co-operation. European leaders have
used the CEIBS as a platform for delivering
important messages to a wide Chinese
audience. The co-financing provided
by the Chinese partner has provided
high quality infrastructure, which
promotes the image and visibility
of both the school.
According
to Serge Abou, Head of the EC delegation
to China 'the aim, is to give to
China the possibility of training,
of having managers of international
level and that was the aim of the
creation of CEIBS.'

One
of the most significant parts of the CEIBS
curriculum which we see in this VNR is CSR
or Corporate Social Responsibility, where
businesses consider their impact on employees,
the wider community and environment. CEIBS
prides itself in taking a leadership role
in CSR education in what could be a resistant
environment.

According
to Prof. Henri-Claude de Bettignes:
'The MBA here are very keen to learn
about things which are relevant to
their country. At a time when the
government is so keen to develop a
harmonious society, the government
is pushing for CSR and therefore the
students realise that this indeed
might be a way to alleviate, over
a period of time a number of difficult
problems that China is facing today.'

Acknowledging the continuing challenges
that China faces, this report also examines
how China can benefit from the experiences
of the European Union. The EU is interested
in continuing to support China's reform
process to ensure a strong market and a
stable partner on the international stage.
In helping to produce highly skilled business
graduates, initiatives like CEIBS can have
their greatest impact.

Dean
Rolf Cremer of CEIBS
According
to Dean Rolf Cremer of CEIBS 'The number
of students we graduate every year is in
the order of six hundred and fifty to six
hundred and seventy at the moment, that
is huge by any standard and very necessary
and much appreciated by the market in China.
It makes a big impact. You can see how significant
the contribution is that CEIBS makes when
you look for example at the numbers of people
who come to CEIBS and try to recruit our
graduates.'
